As the Johor state election slated for July 11 approaches, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Johoreans residing in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to return home and cast their votes. Emphasizing the crucial role each vote plays in shaping the future of the state, Anwar is urging young voters and those working abroad to engage actively in the electoral process.
Speaking at a gathering in Kulai, Johor, Anwar reassured the public that the election results would not influence his position as Prime Minister. However, he stressed the significance of these polls in determining the course of Johor’s state administration. During his address, he delineated the responsibilities between federal and state governments, highlighting that while the federal government oversees large infrastructure projects like the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, state authorities should focus on local matters such as public housing, small traders, and community services.
The Prime Minister pointed to advancements in public housing achieved by other Malaysian states through collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, suggesting that Johor could benefit from similar strategies to reinforce its local governance. Anwar’s remarks suggest a vision for Johor to enhance its management of local issues, ensuring better services for its residents.
Comparing welfare systems, Anwar noted that the federal government’s approach to distributing financial assistance involves direct transfers to beneficiaries, eliminating the need for them to queue in person. In contrast, the Prime Minister implied that Johor’s system could be less efficient. He mentioned plans for the federal government to broaden its welfare assistance programs in the future, though he stopped short of detailing these initiatives.
