On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng welcomed Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Hà Nội, marking the latter’s inaugural visit to Vietnam since assuming his role. The two leaders committed to enhancing their countries’ bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s endeavors towards stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth, while Min Aung Hlaing expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its rising influence on both regional and international stages.
Min Aung Hlaing conveyed Myanmar’s interest in learning from Vietnam’s development experiences and reaffirmed a commitment to the traditional friendship and expansive collaboration with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged recent advancements in their bilateral relations and pledged to boost high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the importance of resuming critical cooperation mechanisms that encompass trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security cooperation emerged as a significant focus, with plans to bolster efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, the two nations aim to expand military training, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and collaborate on addressing non-traditional security challenges. Economic ties were highlighted as well, with both countries agreeing to explore avenues for increasing trade and updating existing agreements in trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese investments in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
Improving infrastructure and air connectivity was also discussed, with a shared interest in restoring direct flights and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism. In terms of regional affairs, Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to working with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both nations supported resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law.
In a gesture to strengthen ties further, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In turn, Min Aung Hlaing extended an invitation to Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, underscoring the ongoing commitment to deepening their bilateral relationship.
