Malaysia is set to address the issue of Myanmar refugees with a focus on national security and the interests of its citizens, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The government aims to manage the situation through a phased and voluntary repatriation process, as well as by enhancing enforcement and inter-agency coordination, in collaboration with countries of origin.
Following discussions between Malaysia and Myanmar, an agreement was reached to gradually repatriate 5,000 refugees. The initial phase involves the repatriation of 1,476 individuals, who have started the process after fulfilling agreed-upon procedures between the two nations.
Anwar emphasized that the refugee situation is a longstanding challenge that has significantly impacted Malaysia’s security, social services, and administrative systems. He stated that the government’s strategy would adhere to national laws while also considering humanitarian aspects.
The prime minister’s announcement underscores the balancing act Malaysia faces in managing refugee inflows while ensuring domestic stability. This approach reflects a commitment to addressing both the logistical and human elements involved in refugee repatriation.
