United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended Indonesia for its significant contributions to global peace and multilateral cooperation. During his remarks at the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta, Guterres emphasized Indonesia’s active diplomatic role in both the Asia-Pacific region and the broader Global South.
Guterres highlighted Indonesia’s involvement in various international organizations, such as the United Nations, ASEAN, the G20, and BRICS, praising its commitment to conflict prevention, sustainable development, and human rights. He also recalled Indonesia’s historic hosting of the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, which advanced principles of non-alignment and national self-determination.
A notable focus of Guterres’ praise was Indonesia’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping efforts. Currently, nearly 2,000 Indonesian military and police personnel are deployed across seven UN peacekeeping missions worldwide. During a visit to a peacekeeping training center in Sentul, West Java, Guterres met with Indonesian personnel preparing for their mission in the Central African Republic and lauded their training efforts and commitment to international peace.
Guterres underscored that Indonesia’s diplomatic engagement and peacekeeping contributions have reinforced its role in fostering dialogue and cooperation among countries and regions. He expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s steadfast support of multilateralism and its efforts to promote global peace and stability.
