New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung are in discussions about a potential visit by Mamdani to Jakarta. This follows their meeting in New York last month during the U20 Mayors Summit 2026. The visit, which could coincide with a conference in late October, remains unconfirmed as discussions are still in the early stages.
During their meeting, Mamdani and Pramono addressed several mutual challenges faced by their respective cities, including public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and urban development financing. Mamdani showed particular interest in Jakarta’s initiatives to alleviate traffic congestion and expand its public transportation network. Pramono highlighted the Transjabodetabek project, which aims to improve connectivity between Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
Another focal point of their discussion was municipal financing. Pramono introduced the concept of Jakarta Bonds, a plan to issue municipal bonds to support infrastructure and development projects in the city. In response, Mamdani offered to facilitate cooperation between New York and Jakarta’s finance teams to exchange expertise on municipal bond issuance.
While the prospect of Mamdani’s visit to Jakarta is still being discussed, both leaders have expressed a commitment to collaborating on shared urban challenges, laying a foundation for potential future partnerships between the two cities.
