Vietnam, Malaysia Enhance Defense Ties and Bolster Regional Partnership

Vietnam and Malaysia are set to deepen their defence cooperation, with both nations aiming to enhance bilateral relations and promote regional stability. This initiative was underscored during talks in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. General Giang commended the ambassador for his contributions to the improved cooperation between the two countries.

General Giang noted significant strides in the defence relationship, highlighting regular military exchanges, policy discussions, and joint training initiatives. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration at international and multilateral events, reflecting a shared commitment to regional security.

The Vietnamese defence chief urged the continuation of these efforts by implementing existing agreements and enhancing engagement through high-level meetings and established defence cooperation mechanisms. This approach is intended to solidify the foundation of their partnership and address mutual security concerns.

In a gesture of ongoing collaboration, General Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to participate in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Hanoi. This invitation signifies Vietnam’s openness to further cooperation and exchange in the defence sector.

Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai expressed gratitude towards Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support throughout his tenure. He conveyed optimism that the defence ties between Vietnam and Malaysia would continue to flourish, contributing to peace and prosperity within the region.
