Thailand Cautions Cambodia: Keep Border Dispute Private, Avoid Global Spotlight

by admin477351

Thailand has issued a warning that its attempts to mend relations with Cambodia might suffer setbacks if ongoing border disputes continue to be highlighted in international arenas. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concerns that accusations against Thailand in global forums could jeopardize the trust-building initiatives between the two neighboring countries.

This warning came in the wake of remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, at a UN Security Council meeting. The ambassador highlighted the humanitarian impacts stemming from past border skirmishes between Thailand and Cambodia, pointing out issues such as the displacement of civilians, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand has criticized Cambodia’s portrayal of these issues, labeling the statements as one-sided and contrary to a joint agreement signed in late 2025. This agreement was aimed at fostering reconciliation and rebuilding confidence between the nations, underscoring a cooperative spirit that Thailand claims is undermined by Cambodia’s current approach.

Meanwhile, Cambodia remains steadfast in its commitment to peaceful dialogue, international law, and adherence to existing ceasefire agreements as means to address and resolve ongoing border disputes. Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona emphasized the importance of these principles in managing bilateral relations with Thailand.

The persistent border tensions, particularly around the contested area near the Preah Vihear Temple, have historically strained the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. Both nations continue to navigate these complex issues, with hopes that diplomatic efforts can eventually lead to a lasting resolution.
