Indonesia has called for significant reforms to the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the necessity for the body to evolve in response to the challenges introduced by artificial intelligence and other technological advancements. During a recent UN debate held in New York, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that the rapid progress in AI, autonomous weapons, and nuclear technologies is reshaping the global security environment.
Sugiono argued that the current structure of the Security Council, which was established in the post-World War II era, is not adequately equipped to handle contemporary security threats without undergoing substantial reform. He urged for increased transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness within the council, advocating for a stronger representation of developing nations and the Global South in international decision-making processes.
The Indonesian foreign minister stressed that reforms should aim to restore confidence in the Security Council’s capabilities and enhance its effectiveness in addressing modern global challenges. This call for change aligns with the concerns raised by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who warned that technological advancements, especially in AI and autonomous weapons systems, are outpacing international governance frameworks, leading to new and unpredictable risks.
The implications of AI in military applications have increasingly drawn attention from governments and international organizations, with the Security Council recently engaging in discussions about the need for responsible regulation of these emerging technologies. Indonesia, which seeks to rejoin the Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2029–2030 term, remains committed to advocating for reforms aimed at making the council more representative and effective.
