As Malaysia prepares for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, the country has set its sights on securing a total of 33 medals. The ambitious goal includes capturing six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze medals during the event scheduled from September 19 to October 4. Chef de Mission Mohd Sumali Reduan expressed confidence in this target, citing the athletes’ current form, recent achievements, and the overall competitive landscape across Asia as key factors in determining these expectations.

Malaysia has identified 13 sports with strong medal prospects, including popular disciplines such as track cycling, badminton, and archery. Other sports with potential include diving, squash, sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. The Malaysian team will comprise 352 athletes and 185 officials, competing in 30 out of the 43 sports featured at the Games, across 156 events.

The Malaysian delegation is led by wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min, who has been chosen as the flag-bearer for the Games. Among the top athletes is track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang, who is expected to make a significant contribution to Malaysia’s medal tally. His participation is eagerly anticipated as part of the nation’s broader strategy to excel in sports where they have historically performed well.

In addition to the Asian Games, Malaysia is also aiming for success at the Asian Para Games, taking place from October 18 to 24. The contingent for this event hopes to achieve another set of impressive results, targeting six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals. These aspirations reflect Malaysia’s commitment to showcasing the talent and determination of its athletes on an international stage.
