Indonesia has taken a significant step in global artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This decision was announced during discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to establishing an AI governance framework that supports equitable development and human-centered innovation while respecting national sovereignty and United Nations principles.
In addition to joining WAICO, Indonesia is seeking a prominent role within the organization’s secretariat, reflecting its dedication to playing a leading part in shaping global AI policies. The talks also highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation with China in AI development, investments, and trade. Hartarto advocated for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese companies to increase their investments in advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks in Indonesia.
Indonesia’s commitment to deepening economic ties with China was further demonstrated by Hartarto’s endorsement of China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. He proposed the organization of a bilateral business summit to coincide with a planned meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit aims to enhance economic cooperation and explore new opportunities for collaboration between the two nations.
These developments underscore Indonesia’s strategic approach to fostering international partnerships in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. By actively participating in initiatives like WAICO and building stronger ties with key global players such as China, Indonesia is positioning itself to be a significant player in the global AI landscape while simultaneously bolstering its economic growth and development.
