Malaysia is poised to send DNA specialists to Nepal to aid in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides, pending approval from Nepalese authorities. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that the request for permission has been made, with plans for DNA identification to commence after the completion of search and rescue missions. The initiative intends to match DNA samples from recovered bodies with those collected from families of missing Malaysian citizens.
Currently, Malaysia has secured DNA samples from relatives of 55 Malaysians who are still missing in the aftermath of the natural disasters. Due to the urgency and limited facilities, several bodies had to be buried rapidly, highlighting the necessity of DNA testing to accurately identify the deceased. The deployment of DNA experts is crucial to bring closure to families awaiting news of their loved ones.
The Malaysian team, comprising 11 members, has been prepared to carry out extensive recovery efforts. They are equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear, which includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and equipment specifically designed for tunnel rescues. The team’s logistical support is further bolstered by a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to navigate the challenging terrain.
Through a combination of search, rescue, and DNA identification operations, Malaysia aims to locate missing individuals and provide definitive answers to families concerning the fate of their relatives. The deployment underscores the country’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid and support in the face of natural calamities, ensuring that affected families receive the necessary closure during these distressing times.
