Indonesia is in collaboration with the United States to return the body of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin, who was fatally shot in an attack by Papua separatists in Yahukimo. The Free Papua Movement’s armed faction admitted responsibility for the assault, citing the aircraft’s alleged breach of a prohibition on civilian flights over territories under their control. The group further accused civilian planes of aiding Indonesian military efforts by ferrying troops and equipment.
The aircraft involved, managed by PT AMA, was set ablaze following the attack. Fortunately, the seven Indonesian passengers on board emerged unscathed, while authorities successfully recovered and evacuated the pilot’s body. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry affirmed its ongoing cooperation with the US Embassy in Jakarta and other pertinent agencies to ensure consular access and facilitate the pilot’s body repatriation. The ministry also denounced any violence against civilians, public service facilities, and aircraft serving isolated communities, emphasizing its dedication to safeguarding foreign nationals within the country.
The United States has stated that it is closely following the investigation but has refrained from making further comments to honor the pilot’s family. Meanwhile, Indonesian officials have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
