As Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam embarks on a four-day state visit to Malaysia, he underscored the importance of strengthening the partnership between the two nations, despite occasional disagreements. Citing over six decades of bilateral ties, President Tharman emphasized that mutual respect and understanding have served as the cornerstone of their relationship.
President Tharman noted that both Singapore and Malaysia have consistently opted for dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international law to resolve sensitive issues, ensuring that disputes do not hinder broader cooperation. This approach has allowed the two countries to focus on collaborative efforts in various sectors.
He pointed to expanding cooperation in areas such as economic integration, renewable energy, talent development, and cross-border infrastructure projects. Notable initiatives include the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the RTS Link, which are seen as instrumental in enhancing connectivity and economic ties between the two nations.
Moreover, President Tharman highlighted the significance of deeper ASEAN integration and the maintenance of a rules-based international order, which he believes are vital for promoting regional peace and stability.
