Mark Rydell, the acclaimed director who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the celebrated film On Golden Pond, passed away at the age of 97. He died due to natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.
In 1981, Rydell directed On Golden Pond, a film that became iconic for its ensemble cast featuring Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The movie achieved critical and commercial success, garnering 10 Academy Award nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Hepburn secured Oscars for their performances, while Rydell received a nomination for Best Director, ultimately losing to Warren Beatty for his work on Reds. The film’s box-office success was notable, grossing over $119 million worldwide, and it marked Henry Fonda’s final film role, for which he received his sole Oscar.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rydell collaborated with numerous Hollywood legends, such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson. His directing portfolio extended beyond On Golden Pond, with other significant works that included The Fox, The Reivers, Cinderella Liberty, The Rose, The River, and For the Boys.
Rydell’s career began in acting before he transitioned to directing in television and film. His contributions to television included directing episodes of several popular series. Later in his career, he became a respected teacher and mentor, sharing his expertise at The Actors Studio West and UCLA.
