Iran has raised allegations against Qatar, accusing it of hampering efforts to investigate the status of three Iranian pilots who Tehran claims disappeared during a recent conflict. These accusations have been firmly denied by Qatar, which states that it is not holding the pilots. According to Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official with the Iranian armed forces, an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting approval for months to travel to Qatar to conduct an investigation. He has urged Doha to grant permission for the visit and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in resolving the issue.
Iranian authorities have previously reported the recovery of the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was allegedly killed in an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. In response, Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, has categorically denied any claims of Iranian pilots being detained in Qatar. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar contacted the pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace and only implemented defensive actions when there was no response to their communication attempts.
Qatar has stated that its search and rescue teams carried out operations to locate the missing pilots and their remains. Additionally, Qatar noted it coordinated with Iran for the transfer of the remains of one pilot that was recovered. The Qatari authorities also mentioned that they extended an invitation to Iranian officials in April to send a team to Qatar to obtain details about the search and rescue efforts but have received no response from Iran.
This disagreement surfaces amid ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and other regional nations following the conflict that erupted earlier this year. Throughout these tensions, Qatar has taken on a significant diplomatic role, aiming to alleviate hostilities and facilitate dialogue among the involved parties.
