Indonesia and Singapore have taken a significant step in enhancing their energy cooperation by signing multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at facilitating cross-border electricity exports. This development emerged from the annual leaders’ retreat in Jakarta, where Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met. The agreements involve Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, which has entered into partnerships with Keppel Electric, Sembcorp Industries, and Singapore Energy Interconnections to bolster the electricity trade between the two nations.
In addition to these partnerships, Danantara has reached a consensus with the Singaporean government on a roadmap to guide future negotiations and project execution. Singapore has lauded this initiative as a crucial move towards strengthening the ASEAN Power Grid, emphasizing Indonesia’s vast potential in renewable energy. As part of their collaborative efforts, Sembcorp, Indonesia’s INA sovereign fund, and renewable energy company SESNA will jointly embark on a $210 million solar power project in Central Sulawesi. This project will feature a solar capacity of 200 megawatts and an 80 megawatt-hour battery storage system.
The agreements underscore the commitment of both countries to advancing renewable energy initiatives and fostering regional energy security. While these collaborations mark a significant milestone, Indonesia is still in the process of negotiating electricity pricing before actual exports commence. This ongoing dialogue highlights the complexities involved in cross-border energy trade, particularly in negotiating terms that are mutually beneficial.
Singapore has set an ambitious target to import 6 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by 2035, and it is anticipated that approximately 3.4 gigawatts of this will be sourced from Indonesia. This plan underscores Singapore’s strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with broader regional efforts to transition towards cleaner energy.
