by admin477351

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for a sustainable political solution as the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches. Guterres highlighted the importance of expanding humanitarian assistance and adhering to international law to alleviate the ongoing suffering in the region.

In his statement, Guterres condemned the 2023 Hamas attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and the taking of 251 hostages. At the same time, he expressed concern over the severe consequences faced by Palestinians in Gaza, including significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction. According to Gaza health authorities, the ongoing military campaign by Israel has resulted in the deaths of over 74,200 Palestinians.

Guterres noted that a ceasefire declared in October 2025 provided temporary relief but failed to ensure lasting security, adequate humanitarian aid, or a viable path toward peace and recovery. The Secretary-General urged both sides to commit to ending the cycle of violence and work toward a future where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist with security, dignity, and their rights fully protected.

The call for a ceasefire comes amid ongoing tensions and violence in the region, underscoring the urgent need for renewed diplomatic efforts to address the conflict’s root causes. Guterres’s appeal highlights the international community’s role in supporting peace initiatives and providing the necessary humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict.
