Ceasefire Won’t Resolve Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute, Says Cambodia.

Cambodia has clarified that its recent ceasefire agreement with Thailand is not intended to redefine international borders or settle disputes over contested territories. Cambodian Information Minister Neth Pheaktra emphasized that the accord, which took effect on December 27, focuses on maintaining current military positions and ensuring the safe return of displaced civilians.

The ceasefire arose from a joint agreement between the two nations in December, yet Cambodia insists that it does not influence the eventual determination of the border. Tensions remain as Pheaktra accuses Thai forces of bolstering their positions in areas claimed by Cambodia by constructing roads, military facilities, and other infrastructure such as barbed wire and trenches.

Concerns have been raised regarding the implications of these developments, with Cambodia arguing that such actions might create new facts on the ground instead of preserving the status quo. The conflict has displaced more than 20,000 people, and Pheaktra stresses that the respect for the ceasefire should be measured by the safe return of these civilians.

Meanwhile, Thailand has conducted tours for foreign delegates, ASEAN observers, and international journalists to sites near the border, including the O’Smach casino area and Choam crossing. During these visits, Thailand presented claims related to the use of casino buildings and alleged cross-border criminal activities. Cambodia disputes Thailand’s control of these areas, maintaining its claim over the territory.

The ongoing situation underscores the complexity of the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, highlighting the challenges in achieving a lasting resolution. Both nations continue to navigate the ceasefire’s stipulations while addressing the humanitarian impact on displaced populations.
