Inspectors Demand Boeing 737 Max Operators Check Fuselages for Cracks

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that operators of Boeing 737 Max aircraft conduct inspections to check for potential cracks in a key structural part of the fuselage. These inspections, set to commence in September, will involve approximately 471 aircraft. The focus will be on the bear strap, a crucial component made of structural sheets that support the fuselage around the exit doors. This directive follows the discovery of similar cracks in older models, specifically the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft, which had already undergone similar scrutiny.

While no cracks have been detected in the 737 Max fleet to date, the FAA has expressed concerns due to the aircraft’s similar design and manufacturing processes, which could lead to the emergence of the same issue. The agency has emphasized that failure to identify such cracks could compromise a major structural component, potentially affecting the aircraft’s overall integrity.

Boeing has acknowledged the issue, stating that it has been collaborating with airlines since the problem was first identified in 2019. The company is in full support of the required inspections, which are intended to detect and address any issues before they become critical. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of the 737 Max fleet.

The inspections add another layer of scrutiny to the 737 Max, which has been under intense examination following previous safety incidents. The aircraft model was grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019, which raised significant concerns about its manufacturing and engineering standards. This latest round of inspections is part of continued efforts to address and rectify any lingering safety issues.
