Russian President Vladimir Putin has put forward a new proposal for BRICS countries, emphasizing the need for an insurance mechanism and a shared grain market to enhance economic ties and foster independent financial and trade systems. During a session with BRICS leaders, Putin advocated for the strengthening of autonomous channels for capital, labor, and technology exchange, aiming to shield member nations from external economic pressures.
Putin’s proposal comes amid ongoing Western sanctions targeting Russian energy exports, which include restrictions from the European Union, G7, and the UK on providing insurance for vessels transporting Russian oil unless they adhere to certain price-cap conditions. To counter these challenges, Putin suggested that the proposed insurance mechanism and grain market could be beneficial for all BRICS members, encouraging economic resilience and collaboration.
The Russian leader also lauded the New Development Bank, an institution established by BRICS countries, underscoring its role in strengthening financial cooperation among emerging economies. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to global challenges, urging BRICS nations to tackle both the immediate impacts and root causes of international crises.
Additionally, Putin called on countries from the Global South to unite in reforming global governance structures and addressing both traditional and new security threats. He highlighted the growing interest in BRICS, noting that the increasing participation of countries reflects a desire for an independent stance on global economic and political matters.
