Russia has pulled its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, marking the end of his seven-year tenure amid escalating tensions over the UK’s support for Ukraine. The Russian embassy announced that Kelin’s diplomatic mission concluded on July 21, with no successor named yet. In the interim, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, steps in as the top Russian diplomat in the UK.
The backdrop to this diplomatic shift is the growing strain between Moscow and London. The friction has largely been fueled by Britain’s military assistance to Ukraine, which recently included British-made attack drones reportedly used against Russian targets. This development prompted Russia to caution the UK about facing unspecified “consequences,” further complicating the already fraught relations.
The Kremlin has criticized London for what it perceives as a confrontational stance, attributing this to the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine. In response, the UK government has maintained its position, asserting Ukraine’s right to self-defense against Russian aggression as a cornerstone of its policy.
With Kelin’s withdrawal, questions arise about Russia’s future diplomatic engagement level with Britain. While the situation suggests a potential shift, the Russian embassy clarified that this move should not be seen as a formal step towards downgrading diplomatic relations between the two nations.
